제1장 좌뇌, 우뇌, 내적 갈등
고사 호옌은 말하곤 했다. "사람들이 내게 선(禪)이란 무엇인지 물어볼 때, 그들에게 다음과 같은 이야기를 들려준다.
아버지가 나이가 들고있다는 것을 알고서, 도둑의 아들이 아버지에게 부탁했다. 아버지가 그만둔 뒤에 가업을 이어갈 수 있도록 도둑질 기술을 알려달라고... 아버지는 동의했고, 그날 밤 어느 집에 둘이 함께 몰래 침입했다.
큰 금고를 열고서, 아버지는 아들에게 말했다. 들어가서 옷을 훔쳐오거라. 아들이 안으로 들어가자 마자, 아버지는 금고를 잠궈버리고, 큰 소음을 내서, 온 집안이 발칵 뒤집혔다. 그리고 나서, 아버지는 조용히 빠져나가버렸다.
금고에 갇힌 채, 소년은 화가나기도 하고, 공포에 싸여서, 어떻게 나가야할지 앞이 깜깜했다. 그때 그의 머리에 아이디어가 번쩍 떠올랐다. - 그는 고양이 소리를 흉내내었다.
그 집에서는 하녀를 불러, 촛불을 들고 금고를 조사해보라고 지시했다. 금고의 문이 열리자 마자, 소년은 뛰쳐나와, 촛불을 불어서 꺼버리고는, 놀란 하녀를 밀치고 달아났다. 그리고, 사람들은 그를 뒤쫓았다.
길가의 우물을 보고서, 소년은 큰 돌을 우물 안에 던지고서, 어둠속으로 숨어버렸다. 쫓아오던 사람들은 우물 주위에 모여서 우물에 빠져 죽은 도둑을 보려고 하였다.
소년이 집에 도착했을 때, 소년은 아버지에게 매우 화를 냈으며, 그에게 이제까지 있었던 이야기를 하려고 하였다. 그러나 아버지는 말했다. '굳이 애써서 나에게 설명하지 않아도 된다. 너는 무사히 집에 왔다. - 너는 도둑 기술을 배운 것이다.'"

Chapter 1
Left Brain, Right Brain Inner Conflict
Gosa Hoyen used to say, "When people ask me what Zen is like I tell them this story:
Noticing that his father was growing old, the son of a burglar asked his father to teach him the trade so that he could carry on the family business after his father had retired. The father agreed, and that night they broke into a house together.
Opening a large chest the father told his son to go in and pick out the clothing. As soon as the boy was inside, the father locked the chest and then made a lot of noise so that the whole house was aroused. Then he slipped quietly away.
Locked inside the chest the boy was angry, terrified, and puzzled as to how he was going to get out. Then an idea flashed to him - he made a noise like a cat.
The family told a maid to take a candle and examine the chest. When the lid was unlocked the boy jumped out, blew out the candle, pushed his way past the astonished maid, and ran out. The people ran after him.
Noticing a well by the side of the road the boy threw in a large stone, then hid in the darkness. The pursuers gathered around the well trying to see the burglar drowning himself.
When the boy got home he was very angry at his father and he tried to tell him the story. But the father said, 'Don't bother to tell me the details. You are here - you have learned the art.'"
